Heralding Freedom on Human Rights Day

On Dec. 12, 2007, President Jimmy Carter and Ambassador Andrew Young will gather to discuss political, religious and civil freedoms and launch the opening of GULAG: Soviet Forced Labor Camps and the Struggle for Freedom.

Once again Atlanta is a pivotal center for dialogue. President Carter; Ambassador Young; Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA; and Sergei Kovalev, Russian human rights activist and former Gulag prisoner, will discuss the suppression of political and religious dissent in the former Soviet Union, the U.S. civil rights movements and the current work of The Carter Center on human rights

Co-sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, the event coincides with Human Rights Day and the opening of a special exhibit Gulag: Soviet Prison Camps and Their Legacy at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site

Gulag, which is open through Feb. 2008, traces the history of the Soviet Union's forced labor camp system and its impact on Russia and the world. The exhibit also highlights the human rights movement in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s.
