The people of Atlanta take a stand against genocide when the Olympic Dream for Darfur Torch comes to Atlanta on Dec. 2, 2007.
The students of local universities and highs schools, several local humanitarian organizations and civil rights legend, Rev. Joseph Lowery have united to bring the Olympic Dream Torch for Darfur to Atlanta. The event aims to raise awareness about the deplorable genocide in Darfur and to pressure the Peoples Republic of China. The host of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games is in a uniquely powerful position to end the genocide in Darfur, one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The Olympic legacy, student movements and internationally renowned centers like the King and Carter Center are iconic reminders of the role that Atlanta has played and continues to play in combating civil and human rights infringements across the globe. When the Torch comes to Atlanta, the city once again has the chance to shine as its citizens unite to pressure China into taking action for the people of Darfur.
Atlanta is the last stop before the relay concludes in Washington, D.C. Following a 3.5 mi. route past many sites of the 1996 Olympic Games, the Torch Relay will begin and end at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Site. The event will take place from 2-4 p.m.
